Living Wages NOW - A protest in Sacramento by ACCE
We face an epidemic of working americans paid a minimum wage insufficient to live without government assistance.
MIT developed an online calculator
of living wages by city and county. Where I live, Butte County California, the minimum wage is $8 with $8.82 needed to live without assistance in a single person household. Adding a child to the household requires a full-time job paying $19.36.
Who pays the difference? Taxpayers via government assistance.
McDonalds profit was $1.4B in the second quarter of 2013, yet they can’t pay their workers a living wage leaving the government to make up the difference?
Shandra from Oakland quoted $15 as an hourly wage she needed to live on. With one child in her home she would still come up over $8 short of a living wage. She’s employed part time making the gap painfully stark.
